Our Voices: Meet Rick, a Technician Who Oversees New Customer Installations in Southern Vermont

Our Comcast employees live in the communities we serve, and every day they’re making sure our customers have the best products, best network, and best customer experience. One of our Vermont employees, Rick O’Neill, is a long-time veteran of the telecommunications industry.

We spoke with Rick about what he does for Comcast and why he loves his job. Read the following Q&A to learn what Rick had to share:

1. How long have you been with Comcast and what is your current role?

I just celebrated my 30th year with Comcast and I oversee logistics around new installations for Comcast Business and Xfinity customers. During my time with the company, I’ve been based in Enfield, Connecticut, Westfield, Massachusetts, Berlin, Connecticut and now Montpelier, Vermont. I started off as a field technician who helped customers in their homes and then was promoted to a technical operations supervisor, who oversaw a team of field technicians, before taking on my current role overseeing new customer installations in southern Vermont, which I’ve held for 14 years. Working at Comcast is more than just a job – it has become a family affair since my son is also a technician here in Vermont.

2. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is that I get to work with many other areas of the business, so I’m constantly communicating and collaborating with other teams, whether it’s the construction, sales, or customer service. Not only is that a great way to stay engaged with my colleagues, it provides the best results when we’re serving our customers. I also like that the technology we use in the telecommunications industry is always changing and evolving. For my job, there is always something new to learn and it never gets boring.

3. You’re part of the team overseeing the customer transition from Southern Vermont Cable Company (SVCC) to Comcast in Southern Vermont. What can customers expect from their new services?

We are transitioning customers to Xfinity and Comcast Business services, and as a result, customers will see greater channel offerings, faster Internet speeds, and more high-definition programming, including Video-On-Demand and Pay-Per-View. Customers will also have access to Comcast’s innovative suite of products and services, which offer increased reliability and system capacity.

4. What is your favorite Comcast product and why?

I’m a fan of good old-fashioned basics, so give me Xfinity X1 to watch sports on, and Xfinity Internet so I can surf the web on my iPad, and I’m happy. I also recently switched our family cell phone plan to Xfinity Mobile. It’s working great and saving me a lot of money.

5. What do you enjoy doing in your personal time?

I’m an avid golfer and sports fan. I also do the public announcing and the official scoring during hockey games at U32 High School in East Montpelier. I’ve done it for years and just love it.
