Twenty-three non-profit organizations across New England received a total of $740,000 in Comcast Foundation grants in 2016 to expand digital literacy and support tomorrow’s leaders.
One of the many grant recipients last year was The Arc New London County (The Arc), which facilitates equal participation and inclusion for people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Southeastern CT. The Comcast Foundation grant provided The Arc with the means to expand their computer and Internet safety program for young men and women with disabilities, which was enthusiastically received by participants, parents and the community.
To continue supporting the program in 2017, Comcast recently awarded The Arc with a local cash and in-kind sponsorship, which will enable the non-profit to launch additional technology-based self-advocacy and empowerment activities.
According to CEO Kathleen Stauffer, the grant could not have come at a better time: “People who previously had anxiety around technology are now asking for more classes and wondering how soon we can offer them, and through Comcast’s generosity we’ll be able to offer a second series this year.”
